Chapter 3, Part 3

Cassie held on for dear life as her self-proclaimed Jedi-rescuer zipped through traffic on her motorcycle. The handcuffs were still digging into her wrists and she wished they could stop long enough to do something about it. Luke eventually puttered to a stop in front of a darkened house in a long line of uniform rental units.

Cassie slid off the motorcycle and took a few good steps back.

“Before I go into any dark and creepy house with you, who are you? How did you do…?”

“The healing thing? I have no idea how I do it. Doc’s still working on it.” Luke shrugged. “Since he sent us to get you, I’m assuming we’re similar. You obviously can’t heal but I can’t wait to see what your power is!”

“Wait! What?” Had he said us?

Luke jogged off down the street towards a well-lit rental house, waving over his shoulder for her to follow. Cassie did in a daze. She and her adopted family had thought they were alone for so long that the idea of others was just plain shocking.

Luke fished around in his pockets, came up empty, and pounded on the door. A young man in his early twenties opened the door.

“’Bout time you got here.” He smirked at Luke.

“Shut up! Not all of us have cool powers,” Luke grumbled.

“All of us?” Cassie interrupted. “How many are there?”

“I mean there’s technically just Josh and me so far, but hey! we found you!” Luke beamed his contagious smile again.

“I’m Josh,” he proffered a hand. Cassie tried to return the greeting but realized she was still handcuffed and holding her jacket.

“Um…”

“You didn’t get the cuffs?”” Josh smacked Luke’s head.

“Hey! You’re the soldier dude. I figured you had some way to get them off that doesn’t involve keys. ‘Cause I don’t have those.”

“Apologies for the Nerd,” Josh said to Cassie. “I’ve got something in the kitchen. You need to meet Doc anyway.”

Cassie followed her two strange hosts down a hallway that spilled into a kitchen. Josh’s light skin was tanned and he carried himself in a way that screamed military as if his hair cut and tan shirt with a Canadian armed forces logo didn’t already give it away. Luke on the other hand slouched ever so slightly and Cassie was finally picking up on the Southern drawl.

The kitchen was deserted except for a steaming mug declaring “bowties are cool” and holding what smelling like tea . Luke disappeared to find the owner of the mug while Josh rummaged in the kitchen drawers, finally coming up with a paperclip. He jimmied the cuffs free as Luke entered with a sandy-haired man in his mid-forties. Rounded spectacles peeped out of the chest pocket of his jacket.

“See, I told you we’d find her in time,” Luke said.

“There was an accident, you know,” Josh reminded him.

“Are you all right?” “Doc” kindly asked Cassie in a dignified English accent. She nodded, half convinced that Caleb had tried to make ice cream again, resulting in bizarre dreams.

“Glad to hear it, Cassie,” he said.

“How do you know my name?” Cassie demanded, heart rate spiking again.

“Well,” he chuckled awkwardly. “I hate to say it like this, but we’ve been looking for you for some time now, Cassandra Adams. It should make more sense when I explain it. My name is Doctor ____  ______.´

OK! Participation time! I need your help naming the Doctor! No his last name is not Who. 😛 So drop me your name suggestions in the comments. A share on social media gets you another entry in the suggestion box. Here’s a picture that might help. 🙂 This is how I sort of imagine this particular character, except a little older.

No judging from your corner of the internet! 😛

Looking forward to seeing what y’all come up with! Make sure you share and let people know that any readers can make a suggestion! You have until next Thursday at midnight to get them in! Check back in next Saturday to see which one I chose!

  1. Doctor Aristotle Needlemyer!
Aristotle sounds intelligent, which is good for a doctor, hehe. And for some reason the narrow shape of his head makes me think of a needle, which doctors also use, and “myer” is just added for optional sound effect. 😛 😀

  2. Ooh, names, always a challenge. Let’s see, maybe, Dr Peter Leslie. Both are British names – I like your description of his accent as “dignified English” 🙂

  5. Hey, I like it Monica! For some reason Tom Hiddleston looks like the word Parsoni.
Was there a Doctor named David?
