Writing – As Explained By The Princess Bride

Howdy!

Today I’m exploring the relationship of two of my favorite things; writing and The Princess Bride. You might think these things have nothing in common, but after some thought, I’ve come up with a list that adequately explains writing.

Being a writer and putting words on paper. Sounds easy right? Thing is, it’s full of it’s own little quirks and adventures along the way. Most of the time, you’re really just tiptoeing the edge of the Cliffs of Insanity.

For instance, when your characters know exactly how to screw with you by throwing unexpected plot twists the size of a boulder at your head…

And as the author, we believe them.

While suffering from a bout of writer’s block, you manage to pen a few sentences and rather proudly glance back over them. Then your characters pop in with something like this.

When plotting is not going quite as planned…

When you’re furiously writing some important scene, or staring off into space trying to get the dialogue just right, and your family or S.O. pops in to talk to you about something trivial like dinner…

“This is not as easy as it looks, so I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t distract me.”

After you get edits back and they’re harsher than you anticipated and you sulk a bit before beginning said edits…

When threatening characters is the only way to get things moving…

“I’ll just have to find myself a new giant!”

Worldbuilding.

“Is there a village nearby?”

After you’ve written a rather witty passage…

When it comes down to it, and a character has to die…

Why you can’t ever voice regret about killing a character…

When the epic castle break-in written at the end of the day looks suspiciously like this…

Let’s be honest. We all have that one character…

  3. Hahaha, that is awesome! And so very accurate, what’s more. And your reaction to those new characters that pop up out of nowhere: “Who are you? Are we enemies?” 😀

  5. You captured it perfectly, Claire! XD Love Princess Bride, had no idea it could relate to writing so well!
    Tackling a story’s plot can feel a lot like how Westley probably felt trying to tackle the giant Fezzik. 🙂 (currently going through). 😛
