Howdy!

Due to some internet issues and having to work all day, I’m just now being able to get my post in for Sarah Allerding’s new book, Rainland! You might remember me helping out with the cover reveal recently. Sarah has come over for an interview today, but first here’s a bit about the book!

When Thomas gets caught in a summer storm, he is sucked into the world of raindrops through a tornado. He learns he will not be allowed to return until he can defeat the lightning, which has been hurling raindrops from the clouds. Many adventures await him in this strange land. Is everything just as the raindrops say it will be? Is it the lightning they need to defend themselves against, or is there a much greater foe behind the disturbing disappearances?

Sarah is a homeschool graduate who enjoys using her imagination to write fiction. She is working on a degree in Theology and hopes to eventually work in the church. She also enjoys umpiring baseball, writing devotions and Bible studies, reading fiction, and playing the guitar.

Hi, Sarah, and welcome back to the blog! What inspired Rainland?

I would say that ultimately, watching Narnia movies is what inspired me to write this book. What actually started this book though, was a writing exercise. I was reading a book on writing and decided to try one of their tips. The result was the beginning of this book.

Neat! I blame the Narnia movies too. 😉 I was able to beta read Rainland for you. (It’s a really fun story!) So what was the hardest part of the writing process for this book?

That would have to be deciding how the story was going to end. For a while I didn’t know how I could end it in a good way. My first ideas were quite uninteresting. I am very pleased with the ending I have now. It is much more exciting than my first thoughts.

Endings are hard. What is one element that always appears in your stories?

So far, in each of my books, I have a character who is funny.

Funny characters are the best. What is your favorite genre to read and why?

Christian fantasy especially if it is in a medieval setting. I really like fantasy because it is like going into a different world where anything can happen that could not happen in the real world. When the Christian aspect is added, I can enjoy fantasy and be encouraged in my faith at the same time. While I like stories like Narnia, I much prefer when magic is left out of fantasy.

I think I like non-magical fantasy better too. Sometimes magic feels like cheating. What writing project is up next for you?

So far I have two more books planned in the Rainland series. I have actually started writing the second one.

Fun! If you need support or encouragement during the writing process, who do you turn to?

My friend who kept encouraging me through the entire time I was writing Rainland.

Love it. And last question! Who are you in a parallel universe?

Hmm…well, if Narnia is a parallel universe then I guess I would like to be Lucy.

Like I said in the interview, I got a chance to beta this story for Sarah, and it was really cute and fun. I’d definitely recommend for any middle grader!
