Today I’m excited to host Kendra Ardnek over for book 2 of her portal fantasy series The Rizkaland Legends. I know a ton of people who loved book 1, so if you like portal fantasy or just some great adventure stories, you should check out the series!

Lady Dragon or Tela Du?
Amber, the Lady Dragon, has been promised a fifty-year reign over Rizkaland and nothing can stop her from claiming it. But when you’ve lived six thousand years, fifty is such a pitiful number. Only one person can keep her from making this reign permanent – the Tela Du, a girl who shall share Amber’s face.
The last thing Petra wants is a magical world interrupting her plans for a normal life, let alone an ultimate battle against the Lady Dragon with only one prophesied survivor. She has her childhood best friend, Reuben, at her side, but she’s not sure if he’s more of a help or a hindrance right now. Though she’d much prefer to just return home and forget about this whole crazy affair, things change when she discovers that the world has surprising connections to her own family – including her sister who disappeared without a trace two years before. Still, Rizkaland can’t possibly expect her to risk her very life, can it?
Interview!
The Rizkaland Legends books are portal fantasy. What’s your favorite thing about portal fantasy?
The balance between the relatability of a character from our world and the magic and wonder of a completely new world. Worldbuilding is my favorite part of fantasy to begin with, but with traditional fantasy it can sometimes be awkward trying to explain the world when it’s the main character’s normal. With portal fantasy, the main character is getting to know the weird new world right alongside you.
Worldbuilding is simultaneously the best and worst thing about writing. How many books are you planning in the series?
Seven main books, but there I have a half-dozen ideas for in-between novellas, not to mention a good number of connected novels set in other worlds.
Awesome! Sounds like it’ll keep you busy for awhile. Was Lady Dragon, Tela Du easier or harder to write than any of your previous books and why?
Since this is the book that I’ve been working on for nearly eleven years, I’ll admit that it wasn’t the easiest book I’ve ever written. However, most of those eleven years were spent learning how to write, and trying to find the proverbial “just right” way to write the story. And while I suffered nasty bouts of writer’s block on it, they were tame compared to the apathy I felt at times with some of my other books.

If I can have Petra’s staff, I think I could make it to the end. Otherwise … I might be an ice statue pretty quickly.
Haha! It’s your fault for writing such a good villain. 😛 If you need support or encouragement during the writing process, who do you turn to?
I have a couple writing friends who’ll I’ll send the story to and have them look at it with fresh eyes for me.
Yay for writing friends! Which one of your characters from this story would you want to spend the day with?
Laura. She’s the Doorkeeper and can control the doors between worlds. So who says the day will ever have to end?
Good point. She’d be fun to run around with. Last question! You are stuck in a magic elevator with only three buttons. Floor 1 takes you to a singed sign that says “welcome to dragon training”, Floor 2 opens into a library where you might get chased by an angry cyborg, and Floor 3 opens to a talking horse Which do you choose?
Seeing as how I’m a certified dragon tamer, I’ll go with the first option.

Eh, well, you know how Petra’s a wee bit scared of horses? One of the few things she retains of my own personality. But, hey, if I’m with Laura, who’s to say that we can’t meet up with talking horses at some point during our endless “day.”

Makes sense. Horses ARE large animals. I’m not horse-crazy, but talking animals are special. 🙂

I am excited about LDTD- but since I’ve already read it twice, I’m mostly excited to be able to get everyone else I know to read it.
On two of the questions- I don’t know. I think that author vs. villain, the author has a decent change of survival just because they know what to expect from the villain. Also, authorial powers. Very useful. (That being said, the author would also have a better chance of making the villain angry through their knowledge . . .)
Also, I agree on the elevator. Dragon training any day. I would choose the library, but I don’t think being chased by an angry cyborge sounds like much fun.

Yeah, that’s true that the author would know what to expect and would most likely be able to outsmart their villain. 😉

Mm-hmm. So then it just comes down to whether or not the villain can move faster than the author can react, even with the author’s knowledge . . .
