Howdy!
So, I’ve been meaning to do Beautiful People ever since I discovered Cait’s blog forever ago, but have never gotten around to it. But now I’m in the middle of summer school finals and I’m really stressed and I haven’t given an actual writing update or anything in forever. So I figured I’d introduce y’all to a favorite character of mine from a WIP called The Lost Son (The Sword of Kirraine series) because it seemed like a good life decision. His name is Gregory and he’s amazing and he constantly cracks me up with his snark.
A bit of background first. When the story starts, he’s manservant/squire/best friend of Michael. They live in Rhimdor who’s at war with Kirraine. Eventually they switch sides and go to Kirraine because plot. (You can get a rough synopsis over on my WIPs page.)
So here we go with the July edition of Beautiful People hosted by Skye and Cait.
I’ve invited Gregory over to answer the questions himself. He’s already waiting for me in my imaginary study in a comfy armchair, with one boot propped up on the desk. Rude.
Me: Thanks for taking the time to meet with me.
Gregory: You didn’t give me much of a choice. Although I did hear around that you were considering someone else for this interrogation.
I was. Then I had to decide which of you would probably be a bit more polite and forthcoming with information. So don’t make me regret my decision. This is everyone’s first introduction to your story and the series.
He smirks. I’ll try and behave then.
Please do. First question. Do you want to get married and/or have children? Why or why not?
He shifts back in the chair. Well I did until something happened in the story.
*coughs* What is your weapon of choice? (It doesn’t necessarily have to be a physical weapon.)
My broadsword. I usually have one or two daggers around as well. But my angelic temperament is my greatest weapon.
Yeah, right. Let me just ask Michael and Helena how they feel about that “angelic temperament”.
He grins because he knows very well how they feel and he’s completely unapologetic about his snarky attitude.
What’s the nicest thing you’ve done for someone else, and why did you do it?
Well, as Michael’s servant and friend I’ve done some things so he wouldn’t have to. I don’t know if they would quite qualify as nice. And before I went to Kirraine I didn’t have many people I cared about. So since you obviously want an answer, I’ll just say taking care of my mother and making sure she has everything she needs.
Have you ever been physically violent with someone, and what instigated it?
*laughs* Yes. In Rhimdor I got quite a bit of trouble because people had issues with my father and what he did before he died. So, yes, they started it and I had to take it upon myself to finish it.
*mutters* and not always successfully.
I heard that.
Well, that is how you met Michael, so…Are you a rule-follower or a rebel?
A rule follower when it suits me.
Truer words…Are you organized or messy?
A little of both? I kept Michael’s life organized.
Ha, yeah. He’d be completely lost without you.
*We both snicker*
What makes you feel loved, and who was the last person to make you feel that way?
Someone accepting me for who I am, and who can see past my usual grumpiness and not care about my family name. My mother has always loved me no matter what and I haven’t always made it easy on her. And is it really a spoiler if I say Lena?
Hmmm…maybe. But I don’t know if it would come as too much of a shock to readers. What do you eat for breakfast?
I’m never very hungry in the mornings.
*jots a note* Interesting. Have you ever lost someone close to you? What happened?
My father when I was about nine years old. He was wounded in battle and died shortly after he was brought back home.
What’s your treat of choice? (Or, if not food, how else do they reward themselves?)
*smiles a little* My mother makes some sweet raisin bread that I love. She usually has a fresh loaf made for when I come to visit.
Awwww…
Shut up.
*laughs* You were a bit more cooperative, so thanks for answering all the questions.
I don’t really see Rhys being very cooperative with those.
Wait, you’ve talked to Rhys? You aren’t even in the same book.
I have my ways.
You know what, don’t talk to him. I don’t need either of you getting ideas. And if you see anyone named Corin or Aiden, just walk away. Stay in your story room, please.
But we already know I’m not a rule follower…
I’m already re-writing your story. Don’t make me make you regret this….
Fine! We’ll keep our chats relegated to the weather.
*grumbles* I suppose that’s as good as I’ll get with either of you. I’ll need to send out a PSA for all other characters…
So that’s Gregory. 🙂 How’s YOUR writing coming? Or how’s your summer in general? 🙂
Thanks for sharing this character interview. I loved it and has gotten me interested in your newest story 🙂

Yay! Glad you liked it! 🙂 And glad it piqued your interest. I’m in the middle of drastically re-writing it at the moment, but I can’t wait to start sharing a bit more on it.

I hope those summer finals are going okay, Claire! (fingers crossed) I’m sending you *mental energy* to help boost your studying!
Gregory is a hoot, lol! When do you plan on tackling the publishing of his story?
Rhys! Why do I not know who this Rhys is? I must know!! XD

Thanks for the mental energy boost! I sure can use it. 🙂
Gregory is a blast to hang out with. 😉 Erm, well I’m in the middle of drastically re-writing his story right now. And then it’s kind of ended up being what would be the 3rd book in a long series, so I’m not sure if I should try and publish his first or write books 1 and 2 and go in order. Decisions!! I don’t like decisions.
Rhys is the MC in the story I talked about with the Words We Say post. His story is called The Mountain Baron for the moment. He’s awesome. I’m hoping to get his story wrapped up sometime this fall because I started it back in 2014 and I need to finish it, I just haven’t had the time to dedicate to all the angry snark and angst that comes with that book. 😛

The fan reader in me says “publish it first!” But the smarter writer in me says “take your time, think it over.” These decisions are so painfully hard, I hear ya!
“Angry snark and angst” ooh, now I’m getting to see what Rhys is like! Hehehe 😉

Haha! And I don’t even know if that covers half of Rhys’s personality. 😉
Yeah, I might make a post or start asking random strangers on the street what they think. 😛 Jk, but yeah, it’s a fun decision.

I like this character! I always appreciate a nice snarky attitude (wow that sounded really weird). Does that make me a bad person?
Do you have any tips for getting past the first few lines of Chapter One?
My writing is. . . Not coming.

Yay! Glad you like him, Lily. 🙂 And no, it doesn’t make you a bad person since I clearly have more than one character like that. 😛 They’re pretty much the best.
Sometimes when I get really stuck, I’ll just skip ahead to another scene I know is coming up and write that and then go back and fill in the blanks later. Or maybe see if you can re-write the chapter to see if it gives you the freedom to move past it. Does that help at all??
Thanks for commenting! 🙂

He reminds me a bit of Merlin from the BBC series.

Yeah, he and Michael do share that same kind of relationship as Merlin and Arthur, but not so quite lighthearted at the beginning since they are kind of on the bad guy’s side…
